An Ode to Ma is for my adoptive mother, Remedios “Meding” Rivero, who took care of me since I was one year old. She raised me and loved me like her own child even when she already had four children.
An Ode to Ma
Who’s gone afar
Above the heavens
She became a star
My Ma, I remember
Her love and care
Never ceased to show that she is always fair
Amongst us, her children not four but five
I am the fifth but not from her hive
The one she kept to nurture and chide
As I am the one who was not her child.
My Mama, not mine
But Mama I find
Her love for me will never come to mind
Abundant not reluctant
Despite blood undefiant
My Mama, not mine but Mama, she became mine.
This for you, oh my Mama!
I miss your wit, your quip, and your whim
Feisty and lively, your satiric sarcasm
Which only meant you adore and treasure
The subject of your stark measure.
Ma, I yearn for your affection
Especially now with my affliction
I wish you’re here to show your consideration
For the touch of your hand is like a cure in motion.
Thank you, Ma, for everything that you were
To me, a child you deemed as your own
Though blood passed, not through our veins
But in our hearts love truly reigned.
